A 19-year-old from Mbuqe Park in Mthatha watched in horror on Wednesday night as his parents were shot dead while he was opening the garage door for them.
Litha Stoyile had just got out of the family's Toyota Hilux at around 7pm to open the door when the shooting started.
Within moments, Mendu (64) and Tembisa Stoyile (60) were lying dead just outside their home. Mendu's niece, Nomboniso, said she rushed to the scene when she heard what had happened.
"Tembisa was lying on her back underneath the car. She had been driving. Mendu was lying just outside the passenger door with his knees raised up," she said.
About 30 rounds of ammunition were fired at the couple. The Stoyiles owned a long-distance taxi business that transported commuters to East London and Port Elizabeth.
Mendu was a former chairman of the Ncedo Taxi Association. He was arriving back from a meeting in East London. His wife had picked him up in town.
Litha said the gunmen were driving a white Chevrolet and when he first saw it he assumed it belonged to people visiting their neighbours.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela condemned the killing.
"We appeal to anyone with information to come forward.
"We believe an R5 and an AK47 were used in the attack," he said.
