A father killed his newborn baby after he took it from its mother's back then beating her by using the baby as a weapon.

At the opening of a court case, prosecutors said Alexander Forba used the three-day-old as a weapon against the woman early on Sunday morning.

He then allegedly dropped the baby on the floor of a petrol station before continuing his attack on the mother.

It is alleged that a row broke out over the baby's paternity at the couple's home in Pretoria West before the mother fled.



One witness claims to have seen the man take the baby by the feet to swing at the mother.

Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said paramedics found the baby wrapped in a towel on the ground, drowning in its own vomit.

The baby was found at 3am on Sunday and the baby later declared dead at Kalafong Hospital.

Olivier said: 'The suspect will appear in court on charges of murder'
